Middle-Level
Grades Project Ideas (6-9)
There are many ways to
incorporate service-learning into your existing curriculum. Here is a
list of abstracts of a number of actual project completed by
pre-service and student teachers during the past few
years:
7th grade - Mathematics students went through a fairly intensive training session to act as tutors for fourth grade students to help them learn multiplication.
9th grade - Mathematics students developed a five learning stations to help second grade students learn math concepts. These students then assisted the second grade students as they progressed through the stations and provided assistance as needed after the stations were completed.
Middle School - As part of a health unit a group of students established a STAND group (Students Taking A New Direction) to help fellow students get up to date and accurate information on drug and alcohol use.
Middle School - To better understand an astronomy unit seventh grade students decided to teach the unit to upper elementary students that were studying both the constellations and in language arts. As a result of the seventh graders presentations, both of the groups better learned about the constellations and their tie with mythology.
8th grade - Sold pottery at a local florist shop. Money form the sales were used to buy toys for Christmas. Students designed wrapping paper and wrapped with toys which were then donated to a local children's charity.
Middle School - Physical education students extended their fitness instruction by having their parent(s) or neighbor(s) participate in an appropriate fitness activity which the student designed and explained to the willing participant.
