Intermediate
Grades Project Ideas (4-6)
There are many ways to
incorporate service-learning into your existing curriculum. Here is a
list of abstracts of a number of actual project completed by
pre-service and student teachers during the past few
years:
4th grade - Students established a Kids for Saving the Earth Club. Came about as a result of the environmental studies portion of the academic curriculum. Kids wrote letters to children who lived in a rain forest. They started a recycling program in the school and petitioned the local council to make recycling mandatory in their community
4th grade - As part of a thematic unit on sweets and candy students made caramel popcorn which they took to the local senior citizens home and shared with the residents.
5th grade - To integrate the subjects taught a three week unit wads build around the theme of whales. The children learned that some whales were on the endangered species list and as a result the class decided to adopt a whale by collecting "pop" cans and by donating their popcorn money.
6th grade - As part of a language arts unit dealing with communication, students prepared mini-presentations informing the entire school about a community service project sponsored by a local business who agreed to donate a percentage of all of their receipts collected by the school to the local chapter of the Red Cross.
6th grade - After studying the local neighborhood in social studies the students in art made a number of bowls and then sponsored an "Empty Bowls" dinner where community members were invited in to a program designed to raise their conscientiousness and to a soup dinner served in the bowls made by the children. The bowls were then auctioned off and the proceeds were donated to the local soup kitchen. 350 people attended the dinner and $576 was donated.
4th grade - These students made place mats as part of their art time and took them to the hospital to be placed on trays at Halloween.
5th grade - Learned to bake Christmas gingerbread cookies and made art project gifts for the local seniors and presented their gifts to the seniors at a program that they developed themselves.
5th grade - The art class made holiday decorations and decorated the local public library with their work so that the entire community could enjoy their work.
5th grade - Students developed questions that were asked at the local "Food with Friends" gathering. The students interviewed the seniors to learn about their community and put on a skit for seniors to show them what they had already learned. They followed up with decorated "Thank You" cards to show their appreciation to the seniors.
6th grade - Students chose a first grade student as a "buddy." Sixth graders helped with homework and listened to the first graders read.
