Open brain coral

This Wellsophyllia open brain coral is a large-polyped stony coral that normally lives on sand or other soft substrates. During the day, this coral inflates dramatically with water taken in through its multiple mouths. At night it expels most of this water and shrinks until it is scarcely larger than its calcium carbonate skeleton. Its nightime size is less than half what you see in this picture.
