Welcome to the MSW Program at Augsburg
The
Augsburg Master of Social Work program is a program of distinction
and quality, fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education
(CSWE). Our purpose is to prepare social work students for advanced,
professional practice in public and non-profit agency settings. Our
mission is to develop social workers for practice that promotes social
justice and empowerment toward the wellbeing of people in a diverse and
global society.
It is our intention that in this program you will:
- learn how an individual lives in and is affected by his or her social environment;
- understand how social policies and programs affect individuals, families, communities, and society;
- apply theories and methods of practice through the field practicum experience;
- use a range of client-centered approches to practice with client groups of all types and sizes;
- engage in practice informed by sound, scholarly research;
- evaluate the effectiveness of your social work practice or of social work programs;
- advocate for eradication of oppression and discrimination; and
- be a responsible and contributing citizen in the local and global community.
The 2 main components that comprise the MSW Curriculum are as follows:
Foundation Curriculum:
The
foundation curriculum is made up of nine courses and a
generalist field practicum. These must be successfully completed before
moving on to the concentration curriculum.
The generalist field practicum requires 420 hours completed concurrently with your enrollment in two integrative fieldwork seminar courses. The full foundation curriculum is required of all students, with the exception of those admitted with advanced standing.
Concentration Curriculum:
The concentration curriculum is made up of nine courses and an advanced field practicum in one of two concentrations:
- Family Practice Concentration: As a growing number of family-related challenges face society, there is an ever-increasing need for highly trained professionals. In this concentration, you will concentrate on promoting empowerment of the family nurturing systems from a developmental and holistic perspective.
- Program Development, Policy, and Administration: This concentration was developed in response to the growing demand for leadership and administration. You will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and achieve needed change, and to develop, lead, guide, and administer programs that serve diverse people in a variety of settings.
