Namibia 2005 was the most recent international opportunity in Namibia.

A collaborative group of learners traveling to Namibia, Africa in the summer of 2005 learned about Namibian schools and participated in a one-day seminar focusing on teaching planned by our group with Namibian teachers.

Imagine the experience based on comments from those who participated in the 2003 Namibia trip:

"As I reflect on my trip to Namibia I am reminded of how it is a country of contrasts. Adjacent to the barren sand dunes of the Namib desert is the immense richness of the ocean. Traditional customs of 11 ethnic groups are being preserved, while the modern urban influences of cell phones and television expand. Simple roads divide the neighborhood developments of the wealthy with the informal settlements of those living in poverty. These contrasts were evident during our travels and reflected in the stories of the people we met. We listened to stories of ruthless colonialism, decades of apartheid and struggles for independence. We experienced individuals who demonstrate the determination, creativity, heart and vision that help them make a difference in their communities. Through our daily experiences we learned about Namibia, a country far away. I am honored to say that a piece of Namibia returned with me when I left Africa. As Urbanus explained to us before we left, we are now the windows through which others will experience Namibia."

"My experience in Namibia was certainly a life changing one. It was the first time I had traveled out of the country and I was unsure of what to expect. I flew home with an extra suitcase loaded with gifts, but what I really came home with were these lasting impressions which I continue to unpack: - So much of our lives are determined by the circumstances into which we are born. - There is far more that calls us together than separates us. - We all have the same hopes and dreams for our children and for ourselves. - Ignorance and fear have devestating effects on our bodies and our spirits. - Poverty affects us all. When our brothers and sisters don't have enough to live fully human lives, our own possessions seem vile and embarrassing. - Every person should have a third world experience. - The realization that I cannot change the world, but that I do have an obligation to change the corner of the world I call home. In doing so I may just may help to make the lives of children in some far away place, better. - We all want to live a better life and depend on God's grace to help us. - Finally, the Center for Global Education is the BEST!
