Join a collaborative group of learners traveling to Namibia, Africa in the summer of 2005 to learn about Namibian schools and participate in a one-day seminar focusing on teaching planned by our group with Namibian teachers.

Paragraph 3 This experience will provide opportunities to build enduring relationships with Namibians. You will learn about the place of technology in communication there. You will increase your ability for global understanding. You will be equipped to use this information to advocate for Africa and inform others so that they will gain a global perspective as a result of your experience.

Itinerary and program overview: (section 3 of the brochure)

The group will be based at the CGE guesthouse in Windhoek, Namibia. The following are examples of possible program content:

Learn about Namibia's history, its people and the challenges and strengths of the society

*Build a foundation of knowledge about the history of Namibia that includes the tribes and their histories as well as colonization by Germany, South Africa, and independence in 1990.

*Tour the Windhoek area

*Interview Namibians at the guesthouse to learn about their lives and traditions

*visit the Woodcarver's Market

*Spend 1-2 days on a game drive through Etosha Game Reserve

*Visit the coastal cities of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay

About schools, students, teachers and the system of education

*Visit a Windhoek/Katatura school several days and spend time with teachers and students in a classroom setting.

*Travel to a rural area north of Windhoek and visit schools, and a teacher center in the area

*Meet with the Minister of Education and Culture to learn about current events, issues and concerns within the Namibian educational system

*Meet with members of the Namibia National Teachers' Union

*Serve some Namibian schools by bringing books and teacher materials and participating in a one-day seminar about teaching (presenting (optionsal)/facilitating/supporting)

*Learn about the impact of HIV/AIDS in schools and ways the schools are working on this serious issue
*Have opportunities to direct your own learning

In place of the General Education/Major Requirements section:

Graduate Credit is available EDC553 International Education as well as continuing education units.

Class will meet 3 times before travel and once after returning.

Travelers who do not want credit will meet once before travel and once after returning.

About the trip leader: Gretchen Kranz Irvine, Ph.D. taught kindergarten and elementary children for 23 years and is now in her 11th year in teacher preparation at Augsburg College. In 2000, she led a five-week Fulbright-Hays educators' travel experience to Namibia. In May/June 2003, she took thirteen undergraduates who are preparing to be teachers to Namibia for three weeks to learn about Namibia: its people, history with a focus on learning about schools. She is looking forward to traveling in learning with you in the summer of 2005.
