History Department Happenings
The Carl H. Chrislock Memorial Lecture sponsored by the Augsburg History Society, honors the
memory of Carl H. Chrislock, former professor of history at Augsburg College and author of The
Progressive Era in Minnesota, 1899-1918 (1971), Ethnicity Challenged: The Upper Midwest Norwegian-
American Experience in World War I (1981), and Watchdog of Loyalty: The Minnesota Commission of
Public Safety during World War I (1991).
This year's speaker is crime historian Paul Maccabee. Mr. Maccabee spent 13 years fighting the FBI to
obtain more than 100,000 Justice Department files on the notorious Public Enemies era of St. Paul—
resulting in the publication of his book, John Dillinger Slept Here: A Crooks' Tour of Crime and Corruption
in St. Paul, 1920-1936 (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 1995). Featured in three national A&E cable
television specials and in the History Channel's "Crime Story" TV documentary, Maccabee testified before
the U.S. Congress on his efforts to crack open long-secret documents about Minnesota's gangland history.
