Dear Host Teacher,

On behalf of the education department at Augsburg College I would like to thank you for allowing education methods students a chance to work in your classroom. The opportunity to work in an actual classroom is very important for future teachers, as this allows them to gain as much real experience before they begin the profession. As a host teacher you play a vital role in their development as teachers. I hope this experience is/has been positive and rewarding for you and your students.

The student you are hosting is currently enrolled in one or more methods courses at Augsburg. These courses require students to complete 20 hours of field experience during the term. The students are to be active participants in the classroom, rather than passive observers. Ideally each student should design, deliver and assess a small mini lesson that is appropriate within the unit you are currently teaching. This lesson can be delivered to a small group of students or to an entire class, which ever works for you and the student. At the same time the student should not be asked to perform duties that should be addressed by licensed professional teachers. I hope that you have had a chance to discuss your needs in the classroom in the context of what the Augsburg student hopes to gain with this experience. Your professional feedback for that student can be invaluable.

With this in mind I am sending along a student assessment form to be filled out and returned. I am including a pre-addressed stamped envelope for this purpose. This assessment will not only help the studentŐs professor work with student strengths and weaknesses but will also help the education department create a stronger placement program. Students should also be providing you with a field experience log that tracks the dates and times served in your class.

Thank you again for hosting an Augsburg methods student. Your willingness to be a host teacher will make a difference in making sure we continue to have quality teachers in our future. If you have any questions feel free to call or email me.

Sincerely,
