Seminar Evaluations

Petitions

Brian Schmit Ð to student teach while completing 2 Winter Tri classes & 1 Spring Tri.

Response: Committee approved, with BrianÕs student teaching start delayed to March 1-May 28 (one class will be done by mid-Feb.). If Brian is overwhelmed, he can always student teach 6 weeks in spring and 6 weeks in summer at Crosswinds. Committee especially wanted to convey to Brian that his proposal is outside the realms of Augsburg policy, that we make decisions on a case-by-case basis, and that he should not broadcast this decision to others as though it should be standard expectation for anyone. The extenuating circumstances in BrianÕs case (excellent student, quit his job to complete program in 1-1/2 years) influenced our decision.

Chad Klopp Ð to student teach at Valley Middle where he currently works as an Assurance of Mastery instructor.

Response: All of ChadÕs clinical experiences have been at this middle school, only 20 hours at Franklin Middle School. Committee decrees that he should student teach at least 2 hours/day at Apple Valley High School for the entire semester, then keep his job as EA at the middle school.

Note: Barbara has since learned that Chad is lacking 3 core courses (geography, sociology, political science), School & Society and Chemical Dependency. This was never mentioned when Chad requested his desire to stay at the middle school. This issue will be discussed at the next Student Teaching Committee meeting.

Student Teaching Applications Online

Barbara will send the elementary and secondary applications to Joe Erickson to be put on the Education Dept. website.

Student Teaching Committee

Minutes for October 13, 2003

Present: Joy Bartlett, Gretchen Irvine, Carol Knicker, Barbara West

Petitions

Joseph Albright: to take PHY 103 and BIO 102 while student teaching this spring. PHY 103 is offered Winter Tri T-Th nights, 6-9p.m. The BIO 102 is offered Winter Tri Friday p.m. or he could enroll in an IDL (independent and distance learning) course at the U which starts 11/15/03. He is currently taking Soc St M.S. Methods, a .5 course, and Special Needs Learner.

Stacy Gohman: to teach chemistry from her classroom at Eagan H.S. She has been hired on a limited license, and has glowing letters of recommendation from her principal and dept. chair. We have allowed this in the past, just need to review each case.

Patrick Hook: to take ESE 311, Soc St Methods next fall while he student teaches. It is the only class he will have left, and is only offered in the fall. He had a job conflict this fall and didnÕt realize the course was offered only once/year.

Chad Klopp: to take geography, sociology, economics, School & Society, chemical dependency while student teaching. NO.

Pamela LaManna: to take MAT 271 (math is her specialty field) Winter Tri while student teaching in spring. Advisor, Vicki Olson, supports.

Brian Massie: to take the equivalence of Outdoor Education at MCTC while student teaching.

Kim Nelson: to take PHY 103 in Winter Tri while student teaching. Lynn & Jeannine have worked with her trying to find alternatives, but nothing has worked. Her student teaching start date could be delayed to March 1.

Kristine Nitti: to take ESE 325 CLE while student teaching. She was enrolled in the class this spring, but dropped it. Did not enroll this fall, taking School & Society instead.

Josh Roots: to student teach before taking Special Needs Learner, offered Spring Tri (April 16 start). Also needs SPC 351 Argumentation, which is offered in the summer (this supports his Communication Arts specialty field), and finally, one lifetime fitness class, offered spring and summer.

Mary Taris: to take PHY 103 while student teaching.

K-12 Partnerships

Cedar Riverside, GEMS, EBD Licensure Program/St. Paul, REACH.

              Recommend that Seward replace REACH.

Look at rankings of our ÒpartnerÓ schools and decide if any changes/additions need to be made.

Discuss Goals (from last monthÕs meeting)

Student Teaching Committee

November 10, 2003

Present: Joy Bartlett, Gretchen Irvine, Carol Knicker, Barbara West

Discussion of how to handle student appeals.

Committee agrees that any appeal a student makes in response to the ruling on a petition by the Student Teaching Committee should be referred to the DeanÕs office. It should not be referred to another arm of the Education Dept. It is also agreed that in ÒstickyÓ situations, the entire department, or at least the Department Chair should be made aware to assure that department policy is being followed.

NCATE Needs:

Partnerships and Placement Requests

Barbara expressed the difficulty of finding placements for ÒproblematicÓ or ÒweakÓ student teachers when we could not find a teacher that we had used before and knew s/he would provide the kind of support needed. This underlies the extreme need to get the supervision course for cooperating teachers reinstated. And it points to the timeliness of partnering with Eden Prairie School District, who also acknowledge this need and want to be a part of the planning and extension.

Also, an extensive discussion of how we could identify sooner those students who do not wish to obtain teaching licensure. After the student teaching placement has been confirmed seems a bit late. As instructors, we should immediately conference with students when we hear or read them expressing a desire to complete the program without licensure, or that they just plain donÕt want to teach.

FORGOT TO MENTION THE NEW POLICY FOR BACKGROUND CHECKS REQUIRED OF STUDENT TEACHERS BY R-A-V-E SCHOOL DISTRICT STARTING NEXT SEMESTER. THIS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT THE NEXT DEPT. MEETING.

ALSO NEED TO CLARIFY THE STIPEND THAT WILL BE PAID TO COOPERATING TEACHERS THIS SEMESTER AND NEXT.

Student Teaching Committee

February 9, 2004

Present: Joy Bartlett, Gretchen Irvine, Carol Knicker, Barbara West

I.            Student Teaching:

a.   When are students introduced to the expectations of student teaching?

- in Orientation

b.   How could seminars be improved?

-       Clear explanation at first meeting to identify student teachers that the seminar is required and part of the experience for which students are registering

-       Perhaps involve students in more of a leadership role in the seminar, i.e., let students lead discussions in the small groups

II.         Seminar for Cooperating Teachers

This just has to be made a priority! One of the ÒproblematicÓ issues is that usually only the ÒgoodÓ teachers respond. Regardless, we need to try to get this back in place. Aim for Fall 2004, the Saturday before Labor Day Weekend, a 2 hour session.

Send letter invitation to all teachers who have accepted a

student teacher for Fall 2004, require RSVP. Word this as an expectation for cooperating teachers. Send announcement with the Acceptance Letters that are mailed in May.

III.     Petitions

a.     Rochester supervision for Barb Purrier

- we need more response from Barb. Committee prefers the model of requiring student to meet us half way (Hastings) for Augsburg supervision in a 6 week placement, then allowing her to student teach the remaining 6 weeks in Rochester.

(Barbara West has received more information from Rick Thoni that the expectation has been for Rochester students to complete ALL of their student teaching there. The Education faculty voted to allow adjunct supervision in Rochester, but that one of our full-time faculty will make 1-2 observations to assure confidence in making recommendation for licensure).

b.     Student teaching half days

                                                 i.     Jennifer Waisanen

this will be allowed only if Jennifer has total control of classes for a minimum 8 weeks

ii.     Maren Macosko (teaching in a charter school)

Barbara has learned that Maren wonÕt be done with coursework, so this is no longer an issue

c.     Kathryn Bunkers (Middle School Methods)

Does not have the clinical hours

- she needs to be informed that the clinical hours for this course must be completed before she can student teach

d.     Pat Hook (Middle School Methods)

Has already met with Anne to complete the clinical hours

e.   Stephen Abenth (MAT 132)

- approved.

f.    Don Winston, math major (MAT 331)

Denied by Math Department

However, after further discussion with Su Doree, who considered the other math courses that Don has taken elsewhere (he already has a B.A. and M.A. in math) that he could student teach successfully without the content of this course.

IV.          Abroad Student Teaching

a.   Jazz Burch Ð Spain

b.   Addie Lauter Ð Australia

c.    Chad Prigge? (he has decided not to)

V. Keith Scott

         - has withdrawn from his student teaching placement after being there 4 weeks due to health issues. Since he withdrew last fall for the same reasons, his ÒXÓ grades for student teaching will revert to ÒNÓ

VI. Revising the Evaluation Form for Cooperating Teachers

-       a title was provided

-       one redundant question was eliminated

-       the term ÒsupervisorÓ was changed to ÒmentorÓ
