Education Methods Course

Field Experience School Choices

One of the requirements in education methods courses calls for students to spend 20 hours per course in an actual classroom setting gaining field experience. The time spent in the classroom must be accounted for and evaluated by the host teacher at the end of the 20 hours. Augsburg students are expected to be actively engaged with the students in the class they are working with. While the professor of each course will have different requirements for this field experience, the following general framework is recommended by the education department.

    1. Minimal initial observation – getting to know the classroom
    2. Tutoring or helping small learning groups – getting to know the students
    3. Develop a lesson or small unit to be delivered to a small learning group or an entire class
    4. Implement the lesson
    5. Suggest videotaping if possible
    6. Assess the lesson and give students feedback
    7. Reflect on classroom experience – Journal, collage, portfolio collection, etc

In order to have a successful and positive experience it is important to find a school and classroom early in the term. While there are hundreds of schools in the metropolitan area to choose from, it is advisable to work in a school that has worked with Augsburg students previously. Augsburg has made a commitment to serving urban students and has therefore developed relations with many Minneapolis schools. While you are not required to do your field experience in one of these schools, it is strongly advised, as the schools are set up to provide an optimum experience for you and the students you will work with. If you need help in finding an appropriate placement that serves both your course requirements as well as fitting in to your schedule please do not hesitate to contact Chris Brown, the Field Experience Coordinator. I can also provide letters of verification if the school or teacher calls for one. I can be found or reached at:

Cedar Riverside adopted service learning as an integral part of its school mission. Every individual at Cedar Riverside participates in service learning and is given specific projects. Currently, there are 35 individual service projects planned for this school year. Every employee, from the cook to the principal, is expected to write a service plan. New this year is a selection of service representatives from grades K-8 that serves as a voice for their classmates. We meet once a month with the assistant director to review our service plans. Our projects range from our neighborhood to Wisconsin and serve as a model to many organizations throughout the country. Cedar Riverside firmly believes that service learning will help our students become better neighbors and active citizens.

We are fortunate to have strong partnerships within our immediate neighborhood and throughout the metro area. These partnerships provide opportunities for our students to learn about college life, careers in health care and life in high school. The collaboration of these partners brings 50-100 volunteers into our school each week.

The Tri-District Community Cultures/Environmental Science School is one of several initiatives sponsored by the East Metro Integration District (EMID) 6067 to promote desegregation/voluntary integration. The "dream" and planning for Tri-District School began 11 years ago, during the 1989-90 school year. At that time, the Saint Paul and Roseville school districts began to dialogue around the topic of voluntary desegregation; specifically, how to break down urban/suburban barriers and create an integrated learning community. Soon after, these two districts were joined by another suburban district: North Saint Paul /Maplewood /Oakdale. After several steering committees were formed to develop the concept for the school, the Tri-District elementary school opened its doors in September 1996 to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. First housed in a Saint Paul high school, the school soon moved (in November of that year) to a new building in Maplewood with a student capacity of 425.

The mission of Tri-District School is "to create a community of learners whose achievement and well-being are enhanced by diversity, which is valued and celebrated." The primary goals of Tri-District School (as specified in the School Improvement Plan) are to:

Minneapolis Middle School Choices (6 – 8)

Franklin Middle School / Afro-centric Academy

1501 Aldrich Ave. North

Minneapolis, MN 55411

612-668-2600

School Day: 9:30 – 4:00 PM

Principal: Joyce Lewis-Lake

Franklin Middle School is a math, science and technology magnet that provides excellent teaching and learning experiences for approximately 650 middle level students in grades 6-8.  Our highly trained and committed staff is among the finest in the city.  They have worked hard to ensure that our students have equal access to rigorous academic program and a social development program with equally redeeming values.

We are called to action by our belief that all children can learn at higher levels.  We have set high academic and behavioral expectations, and are working hard to help our children achieve them.

To maximize each student's opportunity to have equal access to quality educational experiences, our school program has been divided into 6 teaching teams.  Placement on a team provides our students with the 4 core classes of English, math, science, and social studies.

Each team has Rainbow classes (elective) of computer, art (painting or drawing), fine arts vocal or instrumental, or world languages.  In addition to the core and rainbow classes, to provide a comprehensive middle school experience, all students are expected to take swimming, physical education and health.

At Franklin, we strongly believe that our students should learn in an environment where their learning is a top priority, and where their unique interests, talents, and strengths are valued.  Our facility, a sprawling multipurpose complex built in 1971 complements our vision and mission in that it allows us to offer a variety of rigorous and challenging middle level course offerings that supports the developmental needs of our learners, while offering space and interaction with families and our school community.

Our students’ interest in math, science, and technology is supported by the use of 8 computer labs.  Each of the 6 teams has their own wireless mobile computer lab, and there are two stationary labs where teachers bring their classes to conduct additional computer assignments.

School Day: 7:30 a.m. - 1:45 p.m.

Banneker is in the first year of a "Fresh Start," which has given us the opportunity to restructure our school with all new staff and a smaller student enrollment. With dedicated teachers who have more than 70 years of combined experience in the middle grades, we’ve been able to focus our work to design Banneker as a middle school of excellence where all students can and will learn.

Expect These great things:

Our students loop, or stay with the same group of studentsand teachers from one year to the next, in each grade level. Each grade has ateam of teachers in the core subjects of English, social studies and math who move with them during the day. We have what is called "blocks scheduling" which means there are no bells and students move with theirteam from class to class. Teaching teams meet weekly to design and discuss curriculum to make sure class work is hands-on for students and integrated throughout the subject areas. Our teachers and students also participate inactivities throughout the year that help them become a better team.

All students start their day with an hour in their advisory. During this time students focus on building their reading skills, team-building and we also use this as an opportunity to students to give and receive feedback on their learning or behavior expectations.

Crosswinds Arts and Science Middle School is a program of the East Metro Integration District 6067. We bring together middle school students from 10 suburban and urban school districts. Participating school districts include St. Paul, Inver Grove Heights, Stillwater, Roseville, Mahtomedi, White Bear Lake, North St. Paul/Maplewood/Oakdale, South St. Paul, West St. Paul and South Washington County.

The school supports a year round 45/15 calendar. Being year round encourages a constant high level of interest and gives us the opportunities to create enriching intersession programming during our breaks.

The Crosswinds academic program integrates arts and science into all subject areas and emphasizes hands-on, group work to help students understand the connections between what they are learning and the real world. A new school building on Battle Creek Lake in Woodbury will open its doors to 300 students in the fall of 2001. Spaces are available for 6th through 8th grade students from all participating districts.

South High School’s Open SLC is founded on a progressive education model where students are given more freedom and responsibility for directing their learning than in traditional education programs. The program balances nurturing the student’s passion for life-long learning with the more immediate need of preparing for college.

This balance is accomplished through offering the student courses structured around experience-based learning, project-based activities, interdisciplinary units, and group learning. Students will graduate from the Open SLC program as independent thinkers and creators and will be well-prepared to contribute to their communities.

El Colegio is a charter school working in partnership with other cultural and educational organizations to create a center of learning and art that focuses on Latino youth.

Our program uses a project-based approach to learning, combining both academic and hands-on learning experiences. Teaching and learning is carried on in both Spanish and English. We aim to increase the graduation rate of Latino students and increase the number of Latinos who go on to college.

El Colegio was designed to serve as a community cultural center that would be an accessible gathering place for the Latino community. This has been one of the greatest successes of the organization. During the 2001-02 school year El Colegio served an average of 75 students, hosted exhibitions by eight professional artists, had four artist residencies, four student art shows, over 40 theater presentations, over 50 community meetings focusing on issues from immigration to economic support for artists to college admission interviews, sponsored a summer arts festival for the neighborhood, and sponsored the annual Dia de los Ninos Celebration. El Colegio has become a cornerstone of the arts, education and cultural community. Basic Skills Test scores reveal that all students who had previously taken the test made meaningful gains. Average gains in math were 26.1 points. Average gains in reading were 36.2 points. Additional standardized testing included the Northwest Achievement Level Test (NALT). Results of this testing were mixed. Testing was done in the fall and the spring; the fall date was quite late and by the spring date many students had taken as many as eight standardized tests. Both these factors may have contributed to the mixed results. In reading, 38% of the students saw gains in their scores from fall to spring, and in math, 80% of the students saw gains. Overall, testing results are mixed. Results of the BSTs show significant growth by a large number of students, while pre/post testing on the NALT showed limited growth over a two year period
