Cedar Riverside-Augsburg
College Science/Math Collaborative
Begun in 1997, this collaborative brings Augsburg College pre-service
elementary students to Cedar Riverside Community School to work closely with
students, plan and teach science units and math lessons, and assess CRCS
students for conceptual understanding and skill development. Cedar
Riverside and Augsburg faculty provide ongoing mentoring to pre-service
elementary students. In 1999 the Cedar Riverside and Augsburg applied to
the Medtronic Foundation to fund a set of FOSS (Full Option Science System)
curricula to be used jointly with the Cedar Riverside Community School and the
Augsburg College Education Department. These hands on kits have enabled
Cedar Riverside students to learn science through "best practices"
curricula and for Augsburg elementary pre-service teachers to learn and be able
to implement curricula that is consistent with National and State Standards for
effective science instruction. In the past three years 6 other FOSS/STC and
Delta Middle School kits have been added to the FOSS K-5 collection.
These kits are also been used extensively for by other faculty for
hands-on experiments in Physics 103 (Conceptual Physics) and Physic 114 (Earth
Science for Elementary teachers)
